Dorset libraries re-opening information

Our order and collect service is available at 22 of our 23 libraries. 

In line with Government guidelines, we are carefully planning the gradual re-opening of library buildings to ensure that both staff and customers are kept as safe as possible with COVID-19 safety measures in place.

Partial re-opening of 23 libraries across Dorset

The following 23 libraries are open:

  • Beaminster
  • Blandford
  • Bridport
  • Corfe Mullen
  • Crossways
  • Dorchester
  • Ferndown
  • Gillingham
  • Littlemoor
  • Lyme Regis
  • Lytchett Matravers
  • Portland
  • Shaftesbury
  • Sherborne
  • Sturminster Newton
  • Swanage
  • Upton
  • Verwood
  • Wareham
  • West Moors
  • Weymouth
  • Wimborne
  • Wyke Regis

Library services will look and feel quite different as some processes temporarily change and some services will be unavailable.

Visiting the library

  • we are limiting the number of people allowed in at the same time
  • face coverings are to be worn when using the library
  • social distancing measures are in place and customers will be expected to meet these and other safety measures such as using the hand sanitiser provided
  • opening times are limited to mornings only, for example 9.30am to 1pm
  • toilet facilities are not in use
  • seating in most areas has been removed or is unavailable
  • staff are unable to accept donations of books from customers until further notice

Available services:

  • order and collect
  • browsing and issuing books and other items - suggested maximum browsing time of 15 minutes
  • returning books and other items
  • public computer use - internet access and computers will be available but you will need to pre-book a session (maximum of 45 minutes) in advance by contacting your local library. There will be no staff support available
  • the reservation service will be available and you can reserve up to 10 books at any one time
  • from 12 October printing and photocopying will be available
  • Tourist Information Centres (at Dorchester and Wareham)

Services not available at the moment:

Returning items, charges and overdue items

  • all items issued will be subject to the normal loan period  (21 days for books and talking books, 7 days for DVDs/music CDs)
  • items can be returned to any open library and you can use your membership card to borrow from any open library
  • overdue and reservation charges (where relevant) will be applied
  • hire charges for DVDs and talking books will apply for all items issued 
  • returned items will be quarantined for 72 hours on return before we put them back on the shelf. As a result, any items you return may still show as being on loan to you for at least 72 hours but please don't worry as we will ensure that any overdue charges that may have accrued are waived. 

Opening dates and times for each library

Dorchester library

We will be opening the library from 9.30am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday.

Ferndown and Weymouth libraries

We will be opening Ferndown and Weymouth libraries from 9.30am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday.

Blandford, Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Verwood, Wareham and Wimborne libraries

We will be opening Blandford, Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Verwood, Wareham and Wimborne libraries from 9.30am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding Wednesday.

Beaminster library 

We will be opening Beaminster library from 9.30am to 1pm on Thursday.  A returned items and reservation collection service only is available on Monday from 2pm to 5pm.

Bridport library

We will be opening Bridport library from 9.30am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding Thursday.

Corfe Mullen library 

We will be opening Corfe Mullen library from 9.30am to 1pm on Monday and Friday and 10am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

Crossways library 

We will be opening Crossways library from 9.30am to 1pm on Tuesday and Thursday and 10am to 12 noon on Saturday.

Littlemoor library

We will be opening Littlemoor library from 9.30am to 1pm on Tuesday and Thursday and 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

Lyme Regis library 

We will be opening Lyme Regis library from 9.30am to 1pm on Monday and Tuesday and 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

Lytchett Matravers and Portland libraries

We will be opening Lytchett Matravers and Portland libraries from 9.30am to 1pm on Monday and Thursday and 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

Sturminster Newton library

We will be opening Sturminster Newton library from 9.30am to 1pm on Monday and Thursday and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

Swanage library

We will be opening Swanage library from 9.30am to 1pm, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.  Closed Tuesday and Thursday.

Upton library

We will be opening Upton library from 9.30am to 1pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

West Moors library

We will be opening West Moors library from 9.30am to 1pm on Thursday and Friday and 10am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

Wyke Regis Library 

We will be opening Wyke Regis library from 9.30am to 1pm on Monday and Wednesday and 10am to 1pm on Saturday.

Community Managed Libraries opening times

Colehill library

Thursdays and Fridays 2pm to 4pm. Open to the public for browsing.

Burton Bradstock library

Wednesdays 9.30am to 12.30pm.  Open to public for browsing.

Charmouth library

Monday 2pm to 4pm and Friday 10am to 12 noon.  Open to the public for browsing.

Puddletown library

Saturday 10am to 12 noon.   Open to public for browsing.

Wool library

Tuesdays 3pm to 5pm and Saturdays 10am to 12.00 noon.    Community Managed Library - Order and Collect Service only.

Stalbridge library

Saturdays 10am to 12 noon and Wednesdays 12 noon to 2.30pm.  Open to the public for browsing.

Corfe Castle library

Saturdays 10am to 12.00 noon.  Community Managed Library -  Order and Collect only.

Chickerell  library

Tuesdays 10am to 12.00 noon and Saturdays 10am to 12 noon.  Open to the public for browsing. 

If you are unable to visit a library

We have a range of free digital resources that you can access from home with your library membership card. If you are eligible you can apply to use our home library service or if you are shielding have a delivery arranged through the order and collect service
