Coronavirus (COVID-19): updates and advice

Family fun

Here are some top tips to help you get the most out of your visit to Avon Heath.

Go on an activity trail

Pick up an activity trail from the Heathland Discovery Centre and be led on an adventure across the park to find the clues. There are 6 different activity trails to try all year round, plus a different Treasure Trail every school holiday which comes complete with prize and certificate at the end. There is a charge for the trails.

Explore the heathland

While there is a bustling atmosphere of people around the Heathland Discovery Centre and children's play area, tranquillity lies only a couple of minutes' walk across the glorious heath. The miles of tracks offer an opportunity to explore some of Dorset's internationally important heathland and its rare wildlife.

Go orienteering

Buy an orienteering map at the Heathland Discovery Centre and embark on an explorer challenge to find the posts on your marker card.

Have a picnic

There are several picnic areas on the park.  The main one is next to the café, play area and barbecues (for hire) and is dotted with benches. Or venture further onto the heath and enjoy your lunch surrounded by the delightful sights, sounds and smells of the park.

Play a family game

The green next to the play area and café is a perfect spot for kicking a ball about, playing Frisbee or just running around!

Have a party

The rangers can run a number of different parties to suit your group's needs.

Feed a lizard

Spot a rare sand lizard sun bathing in the vivarium next to the Heathland Discovery Centre between April and October. Better still watch the rangers feeding the lizards every Monday during the school's summer holidays!

Hire a BBQ

A perfect way to celebrate a family occasion by sizzling your sausages on one of Avon Heath's barbecues (for hire). Then relax or have fun on the green afterwards.

Ask a Ranger

Bring back your finds, observations or photos from your walk and consult one the Rangers who are always on hand between 11am and 4pm in the Heathland Discovery Centre.
