Young Researchers and Young Inspectors
Dorset Young Researchers
Dorset Young Researchers is a group for 12 to 18 year olds who really want to see positive change in Dorset.
The Young Researchers are given a brief by Dorset Council on what themes they need help researching. The brief in 2017 to 2018 was: 'Social isolation, volunteering and aspirations in young people'.
Dorset Young Researchers researched each topic and then created a survey. They then sent the survey out to all schools across Dorset. They received 2,758 responses which is a huge percentage of Dorset's young people! They also ran focus groups to get more information on the topics to help them write their report.
Once they'd gathered all the data from the surveys and focus groups, they presented their findings to councillors, chief executives, heads of sixth form and colleges, members of Parliament and lots more decision makers.
These decision makers then made pledges about what they would do to act on the Young Researchers' recommendations. Their work makes a real difference to the young people of Dorset. Pizza in every session too!

Once you've become a fully-fledged Young Researcher, you will:
- Design a survey to send to young people across Dorset.
- Design and lead focus groups on the topics in your school and community groups.
- Be trained in research, data analysis, facilitation and presentation skills.
- Present your research findings to decision makers such as MPs, councillors and CEOs.
Since 2012 we've researched what young people think about:
- life skills
- health and happiness
- employment and careers
- social isolation
There's plenty more we'd like to research, so every year we recruit new, enthusiastic Young Researchers to join us!
