We accept pupils aged from 2 to 19 years old.

Needs supported


We support a range of complex needs including:

  • severe learning difficulties (SLD)
  • profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)
  • autism
  • physical disabilities
  • sensory impairment
  • challenging behaviour
  • complex medical needs

Admission criteria


We admit pupils with an education, health and care (EHC) plan.
Admission is through the local authority panel process.

One young man with Down's Syndrome had had several unsatisfactory placements in different schools before being admitted to Wyvern Academy. His behaviour had restricted his access to social and learning opportunities significantly. After one year with psychological and behavioural support and a nurturing approach he is now accessing the full curriculum, has made some lovely friendships and is making great progress with his learning goals.

Wellbeing and therapies

We have:

  • a mental health-friendly school
  • a school nurse from Monday to Friday
  • speech and language therapy (SALT)
  • physiotherapy
  • the MOVE programme (Centre of Excellence)
  • occupational therapy
  • drama therapy
  • rebound therapy
  • hydrotherapy
  • a parent support advisor
  • visual and hearing impairment support
  • clinical and educational psychologist support

Facilities and environment


We have:

  • a purpose-built special school which is fully accessible
  • a hydrotherapy pool
  • a sensory room with interactive projector system
  • a soft play room
  • zoned play areas with accessible equipment
  • a new sensory garden
  • a sixth form horticulture garden
  • walking access to secondary school facilities, sports centre, local nature area, parks and shops
  • a large school hall
  • 5- star-rated catering
  • a fleet of minibuses for excursions
  • a campus setting with secondary, primary and preschool links


Next steps and transitions


Special school places are not always permanent. Every year a child or young person's special school placement will be reviewed as part of their education, health and care (EHC) plan review process and will discuss various options including:

  • pathway into adulthood
  • life skills
  • developing independence
  • sixth form choices
  • Local Offer after 16 years and after 19 years
