Coronavirus (COVID-19): updates and advice.

Physical and Medical Needs Service (PMNS)

We provide advice, guidance and training to make sure children and young people with physical and medical needs get the right support and can enjoy the same opportunities as their peers.

Physical and medical needs

Generally, physical needs are those that affect a child's mobility.

Medical needs are wide-ranging, but can include conditions such as:

  • epilepsy
  • diabetes
  • asthma
  • mental health needs
  • cerebral palsy
  • muscular dystrophy

How the PMNS works

We work with lots of people to make sure children and young people with physical and medical needs can take part in all elements of the life of their school or educational setting, including trips and physical education. We work with:

  • schools and their governing bodies
  • colleges
  • early years providers
  • parents
  • young people
  • health professionals, for example, school nurses, specialist nurses and children's therapy practitioners
  • other services within Dorset Council, such as the hearing and vision support services

What the PMNS can provide

We can provide advice, guidance and training in:

  • how to manage medical needs within a school or setting, including advice on storing, administering and recording medicines administered
  • using medical risk assessments
  • how to adhere to the Equality Act 2010 with regard to disability; the reasonable adjustment duty and providing auxiliary aids
  • safer moving and handling techniques in educational settings
  • moving and handling risk assessments and care plans

More support for physical and medical needs support

See support for children and young people with a disability to find out:

  • what schools and settings should do if a pupil has a disability
  • what the law says about disability
