Our exciting new role of specialist carer at the Harbour

We're looking for specialist carers to join an innovative new approach at the Harbour. Our approach is investing in our own children's home provision to improve prospects for children and young people in Dorset.

The Harbour will bring together a team of professionals from different agencies to support young people who

  • are on the edge of care (this means they're in and out of care)
  • and those where young people need additional help to support placement stability

This integrated new service will support our complex and troubled young people. The Harbour will operate from our planned new purpose-built home for children in Weymouth.

We're looking for specialist carers to join this multi-agency team.

How our specialist carers will work

Our specialist carers will be approved foster carers who work in the residential home and build relationships with our young people. When these relationships develop our specialist carers will then be able to become foster carers for these young people.

This is an innovative new approach because our young people will be empowered to make choices about their own care. Our specialist carers will be empowered to help decide placements too and importantly they will have consistent employment as they will work as relief residential carers in the residential home between foster care placements.

The Harbour will bring together a range of:

  • accommodation options
  • services
  • outreach support

Our team of dedicated professional staff will include other specialist roles such as a clinical psychologist and a speech and language therapist. This team will provide consistent relationships alongside the young person's key worker.

Many of our young people will have experienced tough and sometimes traumatic circumstances. This means they will need help to feel safe, nurtured and secure. To do this we've developed a new approach which is trauma-informed and relationships and strengths based.

We want our young people to reach their full potential and become successful contributors to our community and wider society. We are looking for specialist carers who our young people describe as:

  • positive
  • understanding
  • determined
  • respectful
  • caring
  • someone who will stick through the hard times to help with their journey

Come and work at the Harbour

You may be between placements or a residential carer with experience of looking after young people. Or you may be a retired teacher looking to continue working with vulnerable young people. If you would like to make a positive impact on a young person's life then join our innovative new approach and be part of our integrated new team. We'd love to hear from you.

We offer a competitive salary, fees and allowances will be enhanced due to the complexities of the placements and the additional costs that may be incurred.
