Recycling team talks and school visits
Recycling team visits, Covid-19 update
We can now offer online primary school visits/assemblies and community groups sessions (e.g. brownies/cubs). The children can either be based in the classroom or remotely. The sessions are made as interactive as possible and have been very well received so far. Book a recycling visit/assembly
Recycling team visit
Our friendly and knowledgeable officers can visit your school, community organisation, workplace, communal residence, youth club, volunteering group etc. to talk to you about a variety of waste management-related topics, including:-
- how to correctly use the 'Recycle for Dorset' service
- how to reduce the amount of waste you or your organisation creates
- ideas for reusing waste items
- litter prevention
- dealing with food waste
- real nappies
- where waste goes after collection
Content and running times can be tailored accordingly. If you can give us an idea of the topic you'd like covered, number of attendees, preferred timeframe and location, we will be in touch to discuss your education visit. We can also set up an information stand at your event if appropriate.
We are able to provide assemblies suitable for age ranges from 4 up to 13 years. We cover waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting, but we can adapt the assembly to focus on a particular topic if requested.
We offer a range of different workshops for Key Stage 1 and Key stage 2 pupils. We can also provide class visits suitable for nursery aged children and students older than 11 years.

Free compost bins for schools
Dorset schools can have up to two free 330 litre or 220 litre compost bins plus two lidded caddies for collecting waste. If you would like to order some bins then please contact us. Please note that you will need to arrange a time when an officer can talk to the pupils and staff about composting before your compost bin is delivered.
School waste audits
A waste audit will inform you about the most common types of material types that your school throws away. This will help to give you an idea about what could be recycled, reduced, reused or composted.
Along with a small group of pupils, we will sort through a day's worth of waste from the school, sort them into different material types and weigh these. We will provide all of the equipment required.
We will also give you with a summary of the results that are found and make suggestions on reducing your waste, based on these findings.
