When you need a TTRO or TTRN

A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) or Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice (TTRN) temporarily limits or changes vehicular regulations on the highway.

TTRO

We use TTROs for restrictions with a duration of 6 consecutive calendar days or more, up to a maximum period of 18 months.

TTRN

We use TTRNs for:

  • restrictions with a duration of no more than 5 consecutive calendar days
  • restrictions for genuine emergency situations being carried out with immediate notice, for a duration of 21 consecutive calendar days, with a further extension for a maximum duration of 21 consecutive calendar days if needed

Public events on the highway

You need to follow a different process if you need to introduce restrictions for an event on the highway.

Close a private road

If you need to close a private or unadopted road, contact the landowner to get their permission.

Close a pavement

If you need to close a pavement (footway and cycleway) running adjacent to a road you can make a road space booking.

How much notice you need to give

Planned situations

The minimum standard notice period is 3 months regardless of the duration of the activity.

When you are unable to give the right notice

Please try to plan your activities so the right notice can be given.

You can contact us to discuss a shorter notice period (early start) for planned situations, subject to:

  • the reasons for the early start
  • the duration of the restriction
  • the road space being available with no coordination issues
  • the amount of administration required to fulfil the application

Emergency and immediate activities

Genuine emergency situations come with little or no notice.

Costs

We offer reduced fees for planned situations if you:

  • give us at least 3 months notice
  • keep the duration of restrictions to a maximum of 5 consecutive calendar days
